As we move into the winter months and through flu season, we are seeing increases in respiratory and gastrointestinal (GI) illnesses in our region. In alignment with guidance from the Virginia Department of Health and the Fairfax County Health Department, we are sharing a few reminders to help keep our school community healthy and reduce the spread of illness.
How to Help Keep Our Schools Healthy:
Stay Home When Sick: If you or your child are experiencing symptoms such as fever, persistent cough, sore throat, vomiting, diarrhea, or other signs of illness, please remain home until symptoms improve and you are fever-free for at least 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medication.
Vomiting and Diarrhea: Children and staff should remain home for at least 24 hours after the last episode of vomiting or diarrhea and should be able to tolerate normal food and activities before returning to school. GI illnesses spread easily, and staying home helps prevent transmission to others.
Practice Good Hand Hygiene: Regular handwashing with soap and water for at least 20 seconds helps reduce the spread of germs. Hand sanitizer can be used when handwashing is not available.
Cover Coughs and Sneezes: Use a tissue or your elbow to cover coughs and sneezes, then wash your hands.
Stay Up to Date on Vaccinations: Annual flu vaccines and other recommended immunizations help protect individuals and the broader community. Discuss these options with your healthcare provider.
Clean and Disinfect Regularly: At home, clean high-touch surfaces frequently, especially when someone in the household is ill.
Our schools will continue to follow recommended health practices, including regular cleaning and reinforcing healthy habits with students. We appreciate your partnership in keeping our classrooms safe, healthy, and ready for learning.
Thank you for your continued support in promoting wellness across FCCPS!
